GOVERNMENT REGULATORY AGENCIES AND UMBRELLA HEALTH AGENCIES AND ORGANIZATIONS

  • Canadian Health Products and Food Branch As a health care practitioner in Canada, you will need to meet the Health Product and and Food Branch standards if you use and sell such products. Some products may be on the endangered species list or be banned from use. Obtain a copy of this list off the Health Canada site under statutes, bills and regulations.
  • Health Canada, (Sante Canada) major site to access the relationship of health care, health care policy, legislation planning and reform, health insurance, Medicare/Canada Health Act. Access the province of consideration on the site, all of the health care ministeries for each province, health care laws, statutes and regulations, Download the Endangered Species Act, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, Animals for research, etc which are related to acupuncture and herbal medicine practice.
  • Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council (HPRAC) conducted public hearings on the regulation for Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture and made recommendations to the Ministery of Health. Tel: (416) 326-1550 Fax: (416) 326-1549 Email
  • Occupational Health and Safety Branch The Occupational Health and Safety Administration Standards set by the health branch of the government. will need to be met. This includes site requirements and procedures, sterilization procedures and disposal of hazardous waste. Contact this branch in your province. You may be able to download the requirements from Health Canada's site.
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Canada has done a decent job of tracking the regulatory requirements of Canada. Clickon their name to check their all encompassing Canadian website and to get to the Government Regulations page.

ALBERTA

BRITISH COLUMBIA Acupuncture is regulated in British Columbia.

  • CTCMA (College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of British Columbia) is an official body established in 2000 by the Govt. of BC to regulate the practice of TCM and acupuncture in British Columbia. The College is a self regulatory body that operates under the auspices of the Provincial Government throught the Health Professions Act and the Traditional Chinese Practitioners and Acupuncturists Regulation. The College began designating qualified practitioners as Registered Acupuncturists (R.Ac.) in 1999. Qualified TCM practioners will be designated as Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Dr. of TCM) or TCM herbalist, or TCM practitioners. Applications for designation will begin some time in 2002 after the passage of the TCM and Acupuncture Bylaws. Email

QUEBEC Acupuncture is regulated in Quebec.
